Payworks: Fostering Creativity on the Prairies

Jan 22, 2024

Payworks’ journey began over two decades ago in Winnipeg, the hometown of its founders. And while they’ve rapidly expanded nationwide, the company has always maintained a strong connection to its roots. This connection is evident in Payworks’ commitment to multi-faceted community support and to fostering a culture of mutual success. As Co-Founder Barb Gamey puts it, “Our community is unique in that it’s one degree of separation. We want to see each other win. We celebrate the successes of other businesses here.”

Payworks’ purpose of “doing right by people” is reflected in its support for organizations that contribute to holistic community wellness. The company recognizes the profound impact that artistic expression can have on individuals and communities by enriching lives and fostering empathy. This is just one of many reasons why they were pleased to sponsor Manitoba Opera’s world premiere of the Indigenous-led opera Li Keur: Riel’s Heart of the North.

Payworks is also proud to support the artists who bring unique skills, experiences, and perspectives to the stage. Given this sentiment, the company’s support of Li Keur and its celebration of Métis culture was a natural fit with Payworks’ commitment to uplifting diversity in our city.

As Manitoba Opera expands the narrative by creating opportunities for more diverse stories to be told on the operatic stage, Payworks is also looking to the future. The development of their new head office in South Pointe is paving the way for Payworks’ continued growth and ongoing commitment to serving businesses and communities across Canada.

Manitoba Opera is grateful to Payworks for their continued investment in Winnipeg and support of the robust operatic community in their home province.

Why I Donate: Dale Sulymka

“It inspires me to see great performances,” says Dale Sulymka. “You watch the crowd coming out after a Manitoba Opera performance and everyone’s happy. There’s a kind of buzz.”   Dale knows about the work that goes into making these moments happen. He’s retired now, but for seven years he was the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for Manitoba Opera, and before that he worked with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet for 24 years.    “Being in arts administration for 30 years, I know the financial side can be challenging,” Dale states.  That’s why as Manitoba Opera’s CFO he advocated for an endowment campaign.
