Johnston Group: Celebrating Cultural Diversity Through the Arts

Oct 25, 2023

In the heart of Winnipeg, there’s a company that’s been resonating with community spirit for over 40 years. Johnston Group, a proud Winnipeg-based industry leader in group benefit programs, is a devoted supporter of the local arts community.

Johnston Group’s long-standing partnership with Manitoba Opera is a testament to their commitment to the arts. As a platinum member of Canada’s Best Managed Companies since 2001, their growth and success have allowed them to make a substantial impact on the community they love and the organizations they support, including Manitoba Opera.

The arts provide a platform for creative expression and are an opportunity to promote healthy cultural discussions. Johnston Group believes that a vibrant arts scene is vital to a healthy community and works with Manitoba Opera to make opera accessible and relevant to a wide range of audiences.

This is one of the many reasons they were excited to support the new Métis opera, Li Keur: Riel’s Heart of the North. Johnston Group is a strong advocate of cultural representation and appreciates Manitoba Opera’s commitment to bringing this celebration of Métis cultural to the mainstage. The production fosters community connections through listening, learning, and hands-on cultural activities which align with Johnston Group’s values and Manitoba Opera’s mission to share unique stories that are meaningful to Manitobans.

Johnston Group’s inclusive workplace culture encourages employees to get involved, develop, and empower themselves and their communities. Just like Manitoba Opera’s presence in the community, Johnston Group provides employees with opportunities to volunteer and share their experiences, promoting awareness and interest in important cultural topics.

To businesses considering supporting Manitoba Opera, Johnston Group emphasizes the power of opera in telling stories to the community, about the community. Manitoba Opera’s innovative approach brings opera into the 21st century, providing a platform for diverse voices and impacting how audiences perceive the world. By supporting Manitoba Opera, businesses can play a vital role in celebrating and preserving the arts in our community.

Thank you to Johnston Group for demonstrating that community spirit is an important component of business leadership. You are a shining example of the positive change that businesses can bring to the arts and society as a whole. Together, we are weaving a vibrant tapestry of culture in the heart of the city.

Why I Donate: Dale Sulymka

“It inspires me to see great performances,” says Dale Sulymka. “You watch the crowd coming out after a Manitoba Opera performance and everyone’s happy. There’s a kind of buzz.”   Dale knows about the work that goes into making these moments happen. He’s retired now, but for seven years he was the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for Manitoba Opera, and before that he worked with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet for 24 years.    “Being in arts administration for 30 years, I know the financial side can be challenging,” Dale states.  That’s why as Manitoba Opera’s CFO he advocated for an endowment campaign.
