Canada Life: Supporting Métis Culture Through Li Keur: Riel’s Heart of the North

Sep 19, 2023

Canada Life’s commitment to reconciliation and fostering cross-cultural understanding takes center stage with their support of Li Keur: Riel’s Heart of the North, an epic new opera that celebrates Métis culture and showcases the talent of Indigenous artists in Canada.

As an important supporter of Manitoba Opera’s Community Engagement and Educational programming, Canada Life plays a vital role in helping to coalesce settler and Indigenous communities and delve into the many ways that the Métis peoples have shaped our province – and our country. Canada Life’s support not only underscores the importance of community engagement in bridging cultural gaps, but also serves as a testament to their part in uplifting communities.

Community engagement events and workshops that have been occurring throughout the summer and into the fall, help to extend the impact of Li Keur beyond the performances by deepening community conversations and creating opportunities for cultural appreciation. On the horizon is a beading workshop led by Métis artist Claire Johnston, an afternoon of Michif cooking alongside language sharing, and special opportunities to preview excerpts from this history-making Indigenous-led opera and premiere on a Canadian mainstage.

Li Keur’s community programming has been guided by an Indigenous Advisory Committee and provides unique opportunities to listen and learn about the history and deeply rooted culture of the Métis people. We are grateful for community partners like Canada Life, who understand the value of getting to know our whole community.

Thank you, Canada Life, for your support of Li Keur: Riel’s Heart of the North and your commitment to fostering an inclusive community here at home.

Why I Donate: Dale Sulymka

“It inspires me to see great performances,” says Dale Sulymka. “You watch the crowd coming out after a Manitoba Opera performance and everyone’s happy. There’s a kind of buzz.”   Dale knows about the work that goes into making these moments happen. He’s retired now, but for seven years he was the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for Manitoba Opera, and before that he worked with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet for 24 years.    “Being in arts administration for 30 years, I know the financial side can be challenging,” Dale states.  That’s why as Manitoba Opera’s CFO he advocated for an endowment campaign.
