As the underwriter of Li Keur: Riel’s Heart of the North, BMO’s support takes center stage by celebrating diversity and promoting cultural impact. The bank’s steadfast commitment to engaging with Indigenous communities found harmony with Manitoba Opera’s recent production.
With a rich history of supporting the arts across Canada, in 2023 BMO contributed over $9.2 million to more than 130 arts organizations. This legacy of support made BMO the ideal partner for bringing to life the first Indigenous-led opera on a Canadian opera mainstage. Li Keur serves as a celebration of Métis culture, weaving a tapestry that fosters community, shared experience, and a deepened understanding of Métis heritage.
For the Métis people, storytelling is a legacy—a means of passing down traditions, culture, and knowledge. Li Keur: Riel’s Heart of the North echoes this tradition, taking audiences on a journey from an imagined creation myth to the present day, as a young Métis woman learns about her ancestors and what it means to be Métis. BMO’s underwriting support not only enables this cultural narrative but also reflects a shared commitment to advancing diversity on the operatic stage.
Seventy-five percent of this dynamic and talented ensemble were of Indigenous heritage, delivering a powerful and important message about being recognized for who they are. Indigenous audience members had the opportunity to experience this authenticity as well as witness their culture represented on the stage, affirming a profound sense of belonging.
BMO’s partnership with Manitoba Opera spans over a decade, with the bank proudly serving as the presenting sponsor of Manitoba Opera’s 2023/24 season. Beyond the spotlight of the stage, BMO is committed to investing in Indigenous businesses, communities, and employees—a commitment aligned with their path forward to advance Reconciliation for all Indigenous Peoples.
BMO’s dedication extends beyond the stage, through their Indigenous Banking Unit, which is committed to fostering growth and prosperity for its clients in partnership with Indigenous communities nationwide.
