Academy Florist: A Flourishing Inspiration

May 21, 2024

From Lakmé’s famous flower duet to Don José revealing his love for Carmen through a pressed bloom, the beauty of opera and flowers have long been intertwined.

“Like flowers, the opera can inspire, connect, and bring beauty into the lives of Winnipeggers,” says Allyson Coleman, co-owner of Academy Florist. This alignment with the core values and mission of Academy Florist is one of the many reasons they support Manitoba Opera as the Season Flower Sponsor.

Allyson Coleman and Kayla Robinson are the mother-daughter duo behind Academy Florist, where creativity blooms alongside every petal and stem. Drawing inspiration from the world around them, Kayla and Allyson craft arrangements that evoke emotion and captivate the senses. Their designs, a fusion of nature’s bounty and artistic flair, add beauty and joy to their clients’ homes and events.

Their commitment extends beyond mere transactions; they actively support other local businesses and non-profits, embodying the spirit of collaboration and community. During the summer season they also enjoy supporting local flower farmers by using Manitoba-grown flowers in their designs.

In partnership with Manitoba Opera, Academy Florist finds common ground in a shared passion for storytelling and beauty. With each new opera and event, they create a bespoke floral arrangement that embodies the essence of the opera through long-lasting blooms that will be enjoyed by patrons from the first to the last performance.

For Academy Florist supporting Manitoba Opera is more than just a business endeavor; it’s a commitment to fostering cultural vibrancy in Winnipeg. “The arts teach us to expand and consider not only the possibilities, but also the beauty of our world and all peoples that live here; to see from other perspectives things we may not have otherwise seen.” explains Allyson. “Manitoba Opera shares these perspectives through rich language, beautiful music and extraordinary human voices!”

In celebrating the artistry of both floral design and opera performance, Academy Florist invites individuals to experience the transformative power of creativity firsthand.

Thank you to Academy Florist for their support of Manitoba Opera.

Why I Donate: Kurt Schwarz

Longtime volunteer Kurt Schwarz loves to give his time to Manitoba Opera because it connects him with the people and programs that make the opera season so exciting. But for Kurt, who works in spiritual care in a Winnipeg-based hospital, it’s also important to support Manitoba Opera by making an individual financial donation.

Why I Donate: Dale Sulymka

“It inspires me to see great performances,” says Dale Sulymka. “You watch the crowd coming out after a Manitoba Opera performance and everyone’s happy. There’s a kind of buzz.”   Dale knows about the work that goes into making these moments happen. He’s retired now, but for seven years he was the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for Manitoba Opera, and before that he worked with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet for 24 years.    “Being in arts administration for 30 years, I know the financial side can be challenging,” Dale states.  That’s why as Manitoba Opera’s CFO he advocated for an endowment campaign.
