A Catalyst For Artistic Growth

Aug 28, 2023

The 2023 Digital Emerging Artists Program (DEAP), now in its fourth consecutive year, has a new cohort of artists participating this month. Facilitated online, DEAP is dedicated to nurturing creativity and stretching the digital skills of emerging artists. DEAP is made possible with the invaluable support of RBC Emerging Artists. As a dedicated sponsor, RBC Emerging Artists is playing a vital role in shaping the trajectory of emerging talent in the arts.

Spanning four weeks, DEAP brings together five Canadian opera singers who learn from and collaborate with both core and guest DEAP Faculty. Together, they embark on a journey to refine the artists’ vocal techniques, enhance their performance skills, provide learning opportunities covering topics like civic engagement, grant writing, marketing, and expand their digital skills through the development of a video project.

One of this year’s participants is soprano Chelsea Kutyn from Victoria, B.C. Having recently graduated with a Master of Music degree from the University of Manitoba, Chelsea, who also holds a commerce degree, is in the throes of launching her career. A self-described storyteller, her collaborative creative style is a great fit for the program.

Chelsea believes that the digital medium can help to break down barriers about opera and can provide access to the art form for audiences who don’t have an opera company in their community. Viewing opera digitally can also be used as a gateway for people to experience the art form for the first time.

“I’m becoming more comfortable acknowledging that I do have the ability to do this and to take on digital projects. These are skills that we already have as artists, and this program gives us another level of confidence,” explains Chelsea. “Being able to connect with people through a digital landscape makes it more human and also exposes a greater vulnerability as an artist. Both add to an exciting experience.”

Since a distinct creative voice can make all the difference for an artist, RBC’s dedication in helping to foster this voice is particularly significant. The cultivation of this voice requires time, reflection, community, and exposure to diverse industry insights. DEAP provides just that. Young artists can come together with industry professionals to exchange ideas, share experiences, and access support. This collective community can be transformative.

Amidst the challenges that emerging artists face, a network of dedicated peers passionately pursuing the same goal is so important. RBC’s support facilitates an environment where artists can draw strength from one another, navigate setbacks, and continue their journey of artistic growth..

Supported by RBC Emerging Artists, this year’s artists, including Chelsea, are weaving together a tapestry of new skills that will aid them with anything they have to say through their art.

Thank you to RBC Emerging Artists for supporting the 2023 Digital Emerging Arts Program and the future of opera.

Longtime volunteer Kurt Schwarz loves to give his time to Manitoba Opera because it connects him with the people and programs that make the opera season so exciting. But for Kurt, who works in spiritual care in a Winnipeg-based hospital, it’s also important to support Manitoba Opera by making an individual financial donation.
